Application-writing For Dummy's

Hello lads,
And welcome to "Application-writing For Dummy's"!

I am ColdCore and today I'll be showing you how to write an application, aka "app".


1. Intro

I bet you're very excited about joining Afterlifegaming!
Don't worry, I'm here to help you!

First of all, let us look at the standard which good ol' ex-admin Hoody gave us:

QUOTE

Q: “So where do I sign!?”

A: To apply, we ask that you simply tell us about yourself, including things such as your name, hobbies, how active you will be and any particular interests you may have, age, location (country, don’t need to be any more specific than that), occupation, and most importantly, why you think you should get a trial. These are just a selection of things you should tell us. We are not going to put forward applications for voting if they are extremely short and tell us nothing about you and why you would like to join.

You MUST have a good standard of spoken and written English (we will judge this on your application too) to be able to join #AfterLife, and ideally age 16 or over. However exceptions to under 16’s may be made. Forum activity is also important with deciding on who gets into #AfterLife. Idleing in our IRC channel (#AfterLife.Gaming @ Quakenet) is also appreciated, Ventrilo is also preferable. People who don’t meet the requirements, and apply to join will be ignored!

Let's make a summary!

You will need to include:
-A text about yourself (name, hobbies, activity, interests, age, location and why you should get a trial
-You must have a good standard of English (Note: this does not mean you may not make mistakes. As long as we can understand you )
-Ideally +16, but to be honest, lots of members are -16
-Be active on forums
-IRC and TeamSpeak (Ventrilo is dead) are preferable

2. How?

You're probably asking yourself: "How do I write an app, uncle Alex?"
Well, it's a piece of cake!

Start with a simple "Hi!", first tell us about yourself:

"I am Alex. I am 13-years old. I live in Belgium, Brugge. I speak English, Russian and Dutch. I started my gaming career.... <etc.>"

The first part is the introduction. The second part is the story, in which you describe your life/gaming career:

"I started gaming when I was 8-years old. My first FPS game was Medal Of Honor. I like FPS a lot. I have then involved into a MMORPG-gamer. I like to play games as Runescape, WoW and AoC. My favorite game still is Tetris. I have a Playstation 1 & 2, a DS, a Gamecube and a Xbox. Other than gaming, I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I have a good relationship with my parents.... <etc.>"

Now comes the part where you tell us a bit about your personal life. If you don't feel like telling, there is no need! But everybody likes socia people

"I enjoy spending time with my friends. I live near the beach so I like swimming too. I also love skating. I can already do a 360-kickflip! My favorite food is japanese. I love japan! I have a girl and she's very nice. I love her a lot! A friend of mine introduced me to Afterlife, and now I want to apply too....<etc.>"

Now you told us about yourself! Great! We know have a good view of how you must look like and who you are. If you like, you can even include a picture! We'd love to see your face! Alternatively, scroll down to links, go to the topic where you can post pics and post one

Anyway, moving on! Right now you should tell us why you think we need to accept you, and why you want to join!
These things should be included, but not limited to:

"I want to join Al because my friends are in it. Also, I know a few other members from the server. I play on the server frequently. I like the zombie mod. I just want to have fun"

Now, note... There are a few admins out there which don't like the so-called "asslicking". This means that you include things like "I Love the admins!" or "I want to be an admin, if that's okay...".

We don't like such things. Those are just rude... I hope you understand...

Good, once you're finished with that, just write a simple ending like:

"Thanks for hearing me out! Cya around!"

Try to avoid things like "I hope I'll pass..." or "Please let me in...". Those aren't proffesional, and we both know: "You're pro!"



3. What now?

You've written your application and pressed the "Post new topic" button.
Great job!

I bet you're very excited about when you'll get in!
Shh... Good boy.

Here's what will happen:
Admins will come to your application and look at it. They will make a topic in a special "Members-Only" section of the site. The topic will be called "Voting: Application of Alex". This means that admins will start a vote. All admins+current members can vote "In" or "Out".

Depending on the size of your length, your activity, and your kindness, they'll be judging you. Remember, as soon as you posted your application, people will already start judging you!

"But uncle Alex, I've heard about this thing called "trial period", you didn't mention that you!"

Ah yes, son, indeed!
Afterlife is a big community with lots of members and has a very big list of people who want to join. You are not the only one looking to join Afterlife, lots of people are! So, make sure your application is extra special!

Anyway, a trial period is the period where admins will 'actively' look at your behaviour. You can look at this link to see if you're being tested or not:

If you're not on the list, don't worry!
A trial period usually lasts for 1-2 weeks.

Just wait for a while, and frequently look at the post. In the meanwhile, introduce yourself in this forum:

Basically, just write the same thing you wrote in your application. It doesn't really matter, this is just your introduction. Meet a few people, get a few new friends, and you'll be just fine and ready for the trials, when they come!



4. Ending

To see if you have pasted, frequently look at this list, once you're on the trial list:

These are the results of every period. They will be updated as soon as the trials end.

If you got in, you'll get an orange text under your picture, saying: "Afterlife Member".
You'll get a few extra options, and you'll be invited to the Xfire group.
Of course, you'll also get a warm, fuzzy feeling inside

If you, -unfortunately-, did not pass, don't worry!

You can always re-apply

5. Conclusion

This guide was made for all people who have short applications or don't know how to write one.

I hope I was clear and didn't make too much grammatical errors.

People with questions, PM an admin, a member, or uncle ColdCore , since people rather post their applications on here to see if they're right or not. It's up to U to make your application, not us .

Also, don't copy it word for word, an application is, as I mentioned above, your own thing. ColdCore made the guidelines, the guidelines are the 'black lines' of the 'drawing'. It's up to you to color it.
